Alaska Day 58 - 64 A week in Anchorage

We really like Anchorage and decided to spend a leisurely week just enjoying the many things around Anchorage to do. First we set up in the family camp on Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson (JBER) and then just took one day at a time. We spent Saturday at two different farmer's markets, Sunday at church then lunch with Al and Debbie at Peggy's and then to the Aurora show. Monday we got up and saw a prowler in the Campground, Mr Black Bear was walking through the campground checking each camp site and looking for something to eat.  It was neat watching him go from one camper to the next and then off into the woods. Tuesday was just another relaxing day doing a little site seeing downtown and checking some stores that were new to us and Wednesday was hanging around the camp getting everything ready to head North on Thursday.

Friday morning and Mr Bear is snooping around for something to eat.

These next few pictures are some of the produce at the one of the farmer's market we went to. Notice the prices...  Actually, the prices at this market are better than the other market.

Vine ripened in a greenhouse...
The bigger they are the more expensive...

These faces are very popular at the craft/farmer's markets. These seal fur handmade faces can be found at all the more expensive souvenir stores downtown. If you enlarge this picture by clicking on it you will see the price is $199.00.
This is a scarf made out of Qiveut which is hair from the muskox. The price is over $100 an ounce for the hair.  These scarfs are beautiful and very soft; however, $220.00?
Market snacks...

This place was across the street from the market. We did not go to Chilkoot Charlie's...  We felt we would probably be the other guy?

Sunday morning we worshiped with the First Baptist Church in Anchorage.

These next few pictures show what downtown Anchorage is like...   This is just one of many murals to be seen downtown.
Downtown has a lot of the same stores you find in any other large city.

Humpy' Seafood Grill was featured on the travel channel. "Man vs, Food"  The challenge is called the Kodiak Arrest.
It consists of a 7 course meal which must be eaten in 90 minutes or less to get the meal free, a free T-shirt, and the challenger's name on the "Wall of Fame".  If the challenge is lost the contestant must pay $160 for the meal. The meal includes 3 pounds of King Crab legs, 12 ounces of grilled reindeer sausage, 7 two ounce Alaskan salmon cakes, 6 ounces mashed potatoes, 6 ounces sauteed vegetables and mixed berry pie for dessert.  We wanted to eat there but we never made it to Humpy's. Of course we would NOT have even attempted the challenge.

All these pictures of flowers were taken downtown Anchorage. We named Anchorage the city of flowers..
The city is full of flower gardens everywhere...
Any color, size or type
More purple... Someone must like purple?
More Colors

The Northern Lights at 3 PM downtown Anchorage, Notice the snow?

Monday morning and Mr Bear has come for breakfast...
 Nothing here...
 So I will move on...
 Looks promising
Nothing for a hungry bear

We had a nice evening meal with our friends Paul and Joyce.  Grilled salmon and fried halibut along with fries and salad.

Ready to break camp and move on... right Gypsy?
