We had another great night of rest at the Morley River
Recreation Site located on the Morley River. Up around 9AM and on the road to Teslin, YK
for some fresh cinnamon buns. This time
we had to make a decision; plain, with raisins, or with pecans. We choose the ones covered with pecans. We sure hope we aren’t becoming addicted to
these cinnamon buns. Anyway, after our
cinnamon bun fix and a visit to the wildlife exhibit in Teslin it was on to
Whitehorse. We have been really looking
forward to Whitehorse located at mile marker 918. Even though it’s not the middle point of the
Alaska Highway, to us and others it is a great little town in the Yukon that
makes a great place to stop for a day or two to break up the drive. It has a population of around 26,500 and is a
welcome site after traveling several hundred miles through the Canadian
Rockies. There are a lot of things to do
in Whitehorse that make it a good place to stop; the town is right on the Yukon
River, it has the SS Klondike sternwheeler you can tour, the largest
weathervane in the world (a DC3), a downtown park, river walk, boat tours,
waterfront trolley and of course the Frantic Follies. There are also several nice RV parks and
other businesses that cater to RVs such as Walmart. In fact, Walmart not only lets you stay in
their parking lot, they have a dump station, fresh water, and propane fill for
large RVs. In 2011 we stayed at Hi
Country RV Park for a couple days, this year we decided to stay at Walmart
along with forty plus other RVers. Also
in 2011 one of our favorite things we did on our trip was attend the Frantic
Follies Vaudeville Review which has been a long running vaudeville stage show
in Whitehorse. This year was no different;
Frantic Follies was just as good this year as in 2011. After a delightful evening it was time to
return to our home away from home for a night’s rest (I guess you should say
just for rest… There is no night here).
These three pictures are from a rest area just prior to crossing Teslin Lake and entering Teslin.
A beautiful view of the Yukon river entering Whitehorse.
Welcome to Whitehorse, Yukon. Second largest city on the Alaska Highway.
